TEXT: 2 Corinthians 14, Hebrews 10:25
INTRO: What a church must do to accomplish the necessary purposes of worship regardless of form or style.
CONTEXT OF OUR STUDY. (1 Cor, 14)
1 Cor. 11-14, pneumatikos, spiritual gifts issues spilled over into the church’s worship, and caused many to forget what real worship was all about.
I. WE MUST APPROACH PUBLIC WORSHIP TO BENEFIT THE ENTIRE BODY. (READ 1-19)
A. Two brief lessons: 1.) It is possible to be selfish in doing spiritual things. We must not let our spirituality make worship more about us than about God and His church.
2.) If the church is not built up, worship has been done improperly. Vss. 3, 4, 5, 12, 17, and 26, P the primary benefit of worship, is to be edified or built up as a result of seeking and praising God.
3.) specific things worship is to bring to the church: 1.) to edify ;, 2.) to exhort , and 3.) to console
“Is everyone being edified?”
II. WE MUST APPROACH PUBLIC WORSHIP SO EVERYONE PARTICIPATES. READ vss. 26-30
A. YOU CANNOT WORSHIP UNLESS YOU PARTICIPATE. You cannot just be a spectator and really worship. vss. 26, “Whenever you come together [for worship], each one has a psalm, a teaching, a revelation, another language or an interpretation. ”Vs. 32, list of ways each member can participate and add to the service. Vs.30, “Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should evaluate.”
Prophets: those inspired by the Holy Spirit to give instruction by the forthtelling of God’s plan.
The congregation is responsible for at least half of every part of the service.
III. WE MUST APPROACH PUBLIC WORSHIP IN AN ORDERLY MANNER.
A. Paul actually sets forth 3 things churches must do to avoid distraction and chaos.
1.) Make sure God is revealed in worship. READ VSS. 20-25.
2.) Exercise control over our spiritual gifts. READ vs.27-32.
Vs. 32 says, “And the prophet’s spirits are in the control of the prophets.”
2 Tim. 1: 7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”
3.) Don’t let ignorance or pride create chaos. READ VSS. 33b -36
Chap. 11:5, Paul says, “Every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dis honors her head.”
Vs. 40, “Everything must be done decently and in order.”
Every church is responsible to consider these facts when it plans or executes worship services.
