TEXT: John 17:15-20
INTRO:Why are the saved left in the world for a period of time? How are we set aside as God’s people? And what is our relationship to the Lord and the original disciples?
I. JESUS WANTS HIS FOLLOWERS TO DO HIS WORK IN THE WORLD.
A. READ vs. 15. Jesus makes clear He is not asking or expecting or wanting His followers to be taken out of the race, but that they might be protected from evil.
B. READ vs. 16. Jesus clarifies the relationship His followers are to have with regard to the world. They are to live in it. But they are not to be of the world.
C. READ vs. 18. Instead of being the receivers of service , they must become the servers. “For I did not come into the world to be served, but to serve.”
II. JESUS PRAYS HIS FOLLOWERS MIGHT BE SANCTIFIED
A. READ vss. 17, 19. “sanctify / sanctified” = “hagios,” = “holy” as in “being set aside as God’s holy ones.”
A. The Source of sanctification is God’s word.
Jn. 5:39, “You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life, and it is these that bear witness of Me.”
B. Matt. 5: 17, “Do not think I have come to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them.”
Matt. 4:1-11, “Man does not live by bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
The Lord’s full confidence and reliance on the Scriptures taught the disciples to depend on it as well. C. We cannot be brought into full truth and set aside for the Lord’s work outside the Bible.
2 Tim. 4:16-17, “All Scripture ia inspired by God, and profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
Without the guidance and encouragement of Scripture, we lose our ability to discern right from wrong, truth from falsehood.
III. JESUS PRAYS FOR THOSE WHO FOLLOW HIS ORIGINAL DISCIPLES.
A. A major reason disciples are left in the world after new birth is to replicate followers like themselves. We cannot go immediately home because God uses us to reach others.
Matt. 28: 19-20, “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age.”
B. We are to be like those first disciples, sent forth to do His work.
All Christ’s disciples have been specifically sent forth with the gospel to change the world and empowered by the truth of the Scriptures to present absolute truth. We are among them.
