TEXT: John 14: 15-18
INTRO: Most people who claim to know God, tend to believe they truly love Him. The problem is threefold: We don’t really understand what loving God entails. We ‘re not strong enough by our own strength to accomplish what it entails. And, by our own pride and ignorance, we often refuse the help we are offered to get it right.
I. HOW TO LOVE GOD: THE EXPLANATION.
A. READ VS.15. Jesus makes a very important disclosure: there is only way to show love for God — do what God has told you to do!
God, as Creator, Provider and Protector, intends people live to survive – and His commands are necessary aids to this goal!
B. God is not a human being who can be loved through hugs and kisses and He has no need for things, which He created!
created everything so He has no needs for mere gifts. He enjoys words of praise and acts of sacrifice, but they are empty without coming from a respectful and obedient heart. To love God is not to show up at church out of routine or obligation. It is not to simply brag about your feelings about Him to promote your own self-righteousness. It isThat can only be demonstrated by the keeping of His commands.
II. HOW TO LOVE GOD: THE PROVISION OF POWER.
A. READ vss. 16-17a. Two (2) promises:1.) They will receive God’s help because Jesus “will ask the Father and He will give. . .”
2.) What Jesus will ask for is “another Counselor to be with you forever.”
ILLUS: “Paracletos”= “para =BESIDE/ALONGSIDE.” And “cletos = TO CALL.” The idea is of One who walks besides and protects and guides us. If we acknowledge and listen to the Spirit we can know and walk in truth and power.
III. WHY THE WORLD CANNOT LOVE GOD: DISOBEDIENCE.
- READ VS. 17b. Is it possible to work one’s way to eternal life? IF you OBEY God’s commands, YOU’RE IN???
- Jesus clearly states, “The world (the self-righteous and ungodly) is unable to receive Him (the Spirit) because it cannot see Him (the world understands only what it can experience with its limited bodily senses. It does not believe in what it cannot see) or know Him.”
They will experience the Spirit, be guided by Him, and empowered by Him by being around Him = He will be “in them.”
“I will not leave you as orphans (once having a spiritual parent, but losing Him), I am coming to you.”
