TEXT: Topical; Rom 13:1-7
INTRO: So today I want to speak to you about lessons we must learn from the recent presidential election. Actually, it is about lessons we see in our nation as we come to this election and what it may hold for tomorrow.
I. WHAT LESSONS HAVE WE LEARNED SINCE THE LAST ELECTION THAT IMPACT WHO WE ARE AS A NATION?
A.. God used the past term of Donald Trump, whether you hated him or loved him, to show us the truth about we really are.
1.) Politicians may not be the best people to run a country. Example: Israel and Jerusalem.
Trump was no politician yet he got more done in 4 years than most politicians get done in entire careers. Business, prison reform,
Trump caused people to wonder if politicians were necessary at all or if term limits might need to be installed.
2.) We discovered how incredibly corrupt our governmental can be behind the scenes.
3.) We discovered the American Press, can be incredibly biased and intentionally untruthful.
4.) We have discovered that we can be a nation of intense hatred.
5.) We have discovered that we as a nation will tolerate things we used to consider intolerable.
II. GOVERNMENT IS AN INSTRUMENT OF GOD TO DIRECT HIS PEOPLE.
A. READ Rom. 13:1-7.
1.) Government exists because God wants it to exist. Government has the authority to govern.
2.) Government has the purpose of authority to maintain order and safety.. Government is to have the power to enforce its authority.
3.) We should submit, to God’s “ministers” of God’s administration.
4.) Government has the right to levy taxes to carry out the job of being God’s ”ministers.”
B. Regardless of the form of government, those in positions of authority are there because God allows it.
C. Whoever God puts in the White House He means them to be respected and obeyed.
III. GOD’S PURPOSE IS TO ALWAYS REVEAL HIMSELF THROUGH TRUTH AND LIGHT.
A. No matter how fearful or uncertain any event seems to be for us humans, God is still in control and He will use the event to accomplish His purpose of revealing His truth to the world and give people a chance to have a better relationship with Him.
ILLUS: The Battle of Actium / Pax Romano: The Gospel goes forth.
CONCLUSION
1 Timothy 2:1-2, “[pray] for kings and all who are in authority so we might live a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and it pleases God our Savior.
God will give the country what it needs to learn to see truth – either through joy or pain.
