TEXT: John 9:1-41
INTRO: Acts 1:8-9, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” That is both a prophecy and a command – and it is meant for every believer in Jesus.
I. THE CAUSE FOR BEING A WITNESS. READ 9:1-7.
A. All you can bear witness to is what you have experienced. If you have no relationship, you have no witness, and sometimes, vice versa!
B.Every person, regardless of circumstance or station, is a potential witness for the Lord. The disciples see the man as just as one who suffered for sin and little more. Jesus saw an opportunity for God to be glorified.
C.Jesus changes the man’s life. He touches the man with what is at hand: dust and spittle! When we witness all we can use is what we have “at hand,” some point at which we can connect with the needy and lost.
D.The cause for our being witnesses: The Lord has changed our lives forever. Out of gratitude and excitement, we must obey what we have been told “be [His] witnesses to [the world].”
II. THE MOST BASIC WITNESS IS LIVING OUT THE CHANGE WE EXPERIENCE. READ 8-12.
A. The first thing people see about the blind man is that he is different.
B, When Jesus does something in our lives, there is a change. It is our opportunity to witness. 2 possibilities why someone does not live out their changed life: 1.) He experienced only the excitement of “feeling” Jesus working around him ( friends, people changed), but he was not personally changed by a “personal encounter” with the Lord. 2.) He really was touched by Jesus, but he has not yet developed the gratitude and courage it takes to openly serve the Lord. Over time, one or the other will prove to be true.
C. Claiming to live out your faith as a witness and nothing else is needed is typically a lie. The major change in a saved person’s life is to obey the Lord’s commands and He has commanded we should bear witness.
Rom. 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”; vs. 14, “How can they believe without hearing about Him? And how can they hear without a preacher?
Every follower of Jesus Christ is called to be a witness for Him. We must go into all the world and tell how He has changed our lives.
